Our genetics are on display at shows, but more importantly, make an impact in herds across the country.
AJC Berkshires is proud to now have the third generation participating in national shows and sales. Adam and Al started AJC Berkshires and along with many other Conover family members, enjoy the wonderful opportunities that come along with exhibiting livestock.

Annually, we participate in the Iowa State Fair and National Barrow Show, and consider other options as our schedules allow. There is a rich tradition for our family to raise and sell Berkshire hogs and in 2024, Al and Adam celebrated 37 consecutive years exhibiting Berkshires at the Iowa State Fair.
As we align our calendars for 2025 we look forward to showcasing our breeding program at the Iowa State Fair and National Barrow Show. Please see below for a list of our Berkshire and Yorkshire entries for the 2024 National Barrow Show.

2024 National Barrow Show Entries

We came in strong with 32 hogs in Austin, MN for the 2024 National Barrow Show Open Shows September 15-16. Entries included a full string from AJC Berkshires (four boars and four gilts), two bred gilt from AJC Berkshires, two boars and two gilts from Bonnie Acres, two boars and two gilts from Lillie Ann & Lydia Conover, two truckloads from AJC Berkshires as well as two bred gilts from AJYC Yorkshires. All 30 Berkshire entries are sired by JBM2 Machine 30-1. Here is additional information about our 2024 entries as well as videos of all breeding stock are on our Facebook page. We can't say Al doesn't have favorites... but there are so many opportunities on the 16th to purchase exactly what you need for your program. 

In a very strong contemporary group, "10-9" is a littermate to the #1 & #2 Boar and #2 Gilt for lean gain in contemporary group 1. Her and her littermates speak for themselves!

"10-9" is the one of two Nanatjira gilts to be in our lineup! Her dam “6-1” is the dam of “Icon” and “Icon II” selected by Shipley Swine Genetics. Additionally, “6-1” is sired by A3C6 Namatjira 3-4 a herd sire built by the breeding mind of Al Christian. Her foundation dam, A3C9 Belle 4-5, is an own daughter of AJC4 Black Stallion 4-1 out of IASU4 Hustle Belle L51 50-5. IASU3 Line 51 39-9, the sire of “50-5”, was the #1 Super Sire in the 2005 National Barrow Show Progeny Test, as well as the sire of the Champion & Reserve Champion truckloads at the 2005 Iowa State Fair World Barrow Show. “Hustle Belle 50-5” was an Iowa State University Teaching Farm, World Pork Expo entry purchased by AJC Berkshires. Her first litter was sired by CCV0 Stallion 16-4 and produced AJC5 Lion 1-2. “Lion” went on to be a 100% award winning meat quality sire in 2009. He also sired the dam of AJC3 War Horse 9-3, who was #1 rate of gain sire in the 2014 National Barrow Show Progeny Test (ADG 1.97). “Lion’s” genetic potency surfaced again the following year as being the maternal grandsire of AJC4 Trojan Horse, whose son, AJC6 Trojan Horse 3-2 sired our 2018 Progeny Pen. That 2018 Progeny Test data overwhelmed the meat quality world posting results of 6.10 ultimate pH, 8.29 Juiciness, 8.43 Tenderness. The results of “6-1’s” first litter, with 12 born, sired by AJC8 War Horse 7-8 became the dam of “Icon” and “Icon II” where this story began.

This February gilt is a maternal sister to "Balto!" She's stout, I mean really stout. Her dam is as stout as you can make them. "16-9" also has a littermate is also a truckload entry at the 2024 National Barrow Show. "16-9's" MGS is truly a rugged power hog and his sire has been National Progeny Pen Tested.

We only brought you two gilts with "Namatjira"
in their pedigree, but came in hot and heavy with our boar selection. “10-1's” MGS is A3C6 Namatjira 3-4 a herd sire built by the breeding mind of Al Christian. Her foundation dam, A3C9 Belle 4-5, is an own daughter of AJC4 Black Stallion 4-1 out of IASU4 Hustle Belle L51 50-5. IASU3 Line 51 39-9, the sire of “50-5”, was the #1 Super Sire in the 2005 National Barrow Show Progeny Test, as well as the sire of the Champion & Reserve Champion truckloads at the 2005 Iowa State Fair World Barrow Show.

Our only "Skyway" of the offering! While you hear a lot about the "Hustle Belle" line, the "Skyway's" have a special place in our program too. "22-2's" maternal great grandam, WIPP4 MS Skyway 8-2, recorded 6 total pigs through National Progeny Test with an average of a 6.10 PH score, as well as multiple dominating quality traits. She also is the producer of AJC8 War Horse 7-2, 7-3, 7-4, 7-6, and 7-8 (and 3 other brothers in production) who are sires in many of our pedigrees. Her daughter, ("22-2's maternal granddam), AJC8 MS Skyway 7-11, produced AJC0 Diamond Lad 14-1 and14-3 which played a pivotal role in AJC. "22-2's" MGS is loaded with proven meat quality genetics. In 2020, Al told me "14-4" would leave a mark on our program and he stayed true to his word. "14-4's" sire is a paternal brother to AJC6 Trojan Horse 3-2, the sire of our 2018 progeny pen. He recorded an Adj. Ultimate PH 6.10, which is off the charts!  His paternal dam, AJC3 Bonnie 1-11, is by the #1 PSI sire in the breed, KSWV1 Dream Scheme 9-12, with a SPI of 120.36.  The dam of 14-4, AJC7 Hustle Belle 14-10, is an elite Berkshire female.

​“Savannah 26-3" has been easy to spot since weaning and continued to sort herself apart as she has matured. With “Abel 90-2” close in this gilt’s pedigree it has been easy to see the added performance as this litter developed and her littermate boar posted a 1.86 weight per day of age as our entry at the Iowa State Fair. Her sire was a new twist in AJYC Yorkshires utilizing "Pretty Boy" to add additional bone, stoutness and ruggedness to our fast growing females. With the Yorkshires in Missouri, Lillie and Lydia have taken an active role in the farm and this is Lillie's pick who also calls her "Unicorn Savannah". 

Bred to "7-3", one of our two new sires at AJYC who Adam has nicknamed "Battle Cry". This boar was raised by Kenny Robertson of Wewoka, OK.

This pig has been awesome for a two-year-old! Lydia has been following this pig since it was born and loves helping her dad with chores. Willing to be brushed the first day after moving to the show pen after Iowa State Fair, this gilt has been great to work with. A gilt that represents our program from a pedigree standpoint several continual generations back. There is a unique blend of sires in her pedigree that individually made a national impact as maternal leaders, performance hogs and power hogs alike. "25-7's“ great granddam “3-10” is the most influential female in the AJYC program and is staged to appear in every AJYC pedigree in the near future.

"29-13" and her littermate entry are from a strong foundation and we believe their production will breed strong and consistent like their mother and grandmother. This duo is the FIRST litter sired by "Machine" and are the first two confirmed bred to our junior herd sire, "King". 

Her maternal grand sire, "19-2", is now at the great Tuthill Berkshire herd in Illinois. His sire, AJC8 Warhorse 7-8 has 4 littermate boars, who have been Progeny Pen Tested. The dam of "19-2", AJC9 Sterling Lady 21-9, has had pigs on test and his grandmother, "14-10", has had several pigs tested through multiple Progeny Tests.

"29-14" is the bigger framed of the two littermate entries. It's anyone's guess which one will have the next great herd boar by the up and coming herd sire, "King". Watch her video on our Facebook page to get a good look at her!

"29-14" ranked #1 in her contemporary group for lean gain and her dam and her dams' littermate also ranked #1 and #2 in their contemporary groups as they came off test. Multiple Progeny tests have shown the success of the maternal side of this pedigree with known consistency.

AJC Berkshires Purebred Truckloads

Truckloads are an adventure! With data collection in mind, this is a favorite contest for Al and Adam who annually strive to compete in this division. Raising and keeping a uniform truckload together is an exhilarating challenge.

If you are not familiar with the contest, it is evaluated by the quality and consistency of the six hogs brought into the ring as a group. Of the six, at least three must be barrows.

It's a big year and this year, Al decided to bring not one, but two truckloads. On September 9, 18 hogs were clipped to continue to sort down the create the most uniform truckloads. The hope is that we have one in lightweight and one in the heavyweight division, but time will tell. The truckloads show on Sunday afternoon in Austin, MN.

All truckload hogs were again sired by one boar, JBM2 MACHINE 30-1.
